Welcome

My guardian really stressed the fact to me that I had a chance to be better than my family ever was. I will be the first in my family to go to college. So I thought to myself that I can do things that are out of my families reach.”  Nsoro Scholar

The nsoro Educational Foundation was established through the vision and generosity of Darrell and Ena Mays, co-founders of nsoro, LLC, a telecommunications solutions company. The Mays adopted the derivative “nsoro” from the word Nsoromma, which in Ghana means “the belief in a higher being”. As a testimony of their faith the Mays founded the nsoro Educational Foundation to support children in foster care. On a return flight from Puerto Rico, Darrell Mays watched in dismay a documentary about a young man, still in high school, who had recently turned 18 and had “aged-out” of the foster care system. This young man, having no family and nowhere to go, was living on an exterior porch of a friend’s home. In that instance, the vision of the foundation became clear. During Christmas 2005, the Mays were moved to donate the seed money for the nsoro Foundation out of their devout faith in God and commitment to serving others.

The mission of the nsoro Foundation is to cultivate a “circle of support” that nurtures and inspires emancipated foster care young adults to attend college. We provide non-merit based academic scholarships to youth in foster care and to “aged-out” foster students. On average only 2% of foster care young adults obtain a bachelor’s degree. The nsoro Foundation provides academic and practical support to increase the opportunity for foster care students to pursue a post-secondary degree or trade school certificate. In addition to academic scholarships with a multi-year commitment, we also provide mentoring programs, internships and the emotional support necessary to sustain our students through college graduation.
The nsoro Foundation is committed to fostering possibilities for high academic achievement among young adults who have been in foster care.

NSORO Scholar Quotes

“Receiving the Nsoro Scholarship will provide me with even more confidence and motivation knowing I can achieve anything I set my mind to.”

“Receiving this scholarship could help me prove to those people that just because I was in state’s custody does not mean that I am not going to be successful in life. I am a survivor and that is success in itself”.

“If I could obtain this scholarship it would be a nice way to help pay back my grandparents for all the things they’ve done and show them that those years were not wasted away.”

“I want you to realize that I am willing to do my best at all I do when it comes to college. So I hope that you see me as a hard-working young adult and know that this scholarship money is being well invested.”
